What can I expect in a counselling session? : A Step-by-Step Guide for New Clients

Welcome! We’re so glad you’ve decided to begin your counselling journey with us. This is a big step—congrats! Now, you might be wondering, “What’s next?” Before your first session, it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. Let’s walk through what you can expect before, during, and after your first counselling session so you can feel more comfortable and ready.

Consultation Call
Before scheduling your session, the first step is a complimentary 15-minute consultation call with your therapist. This call is a great opportunity to ask questions, discuss your needs, and see if we’re the right fit for you—all with no obligation. We’re here to listen, support, and help you decide the best way forward. If we believe we’re the right fit, we’ll go ahead and schedule your first session!

Before Your First Session
You will receive an email with a link to our online portal and an intake form. If possible, please fill out the form and set up your account before your appointment to save time. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me as well. For virtual sessions, you will receive the video link before your appointment.

Your First (Few) Sessions
In your first session, we’ll go over your information and discuss the key points in the informed consent form. We’ll spend some time getting to know each other. I’ll also ask about your background, what’s been going on in your life, and what you hope to get out of counselling. This may take a few sessions. However, this is all important for me to understand how I can best help you, build a trusting relationship, and set our goals.

During Sessions
You are in control of the session! Feel free to share only what you’re comfortable with—whatever you need. Sessions may not always go as planned because it’s important to tailor our approach to suit your needs. Counselling can bring up a lot of different emotions. You might feel relieved, happy, sad, or even a bit uncomfortable. That’s totally normal! It’s all part of the process of healing and growing.

End of Session
Sessions usually last about 50 minutes and are often scheduled weekly or bi-weekly. We’ll discuss your ideal appointment schedule near the end of the session. It’s also normal to feel tender after a session. Please do what you need to take care of yourself!

You’ve Got This!!!
Starting counselling is a brave step. If you have any questions or are ready to dive in, please feel free to reach out. You’re not alone on this journey, and there’s plenty of support waiting for you.
